On Saturday, January 11, Peace Group member Steve Gold will guide us through an interactive workshop based on Yale history professor Timothy Snyder’s very short book On Tyranny - Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century. Snyder is an expert on how democracies can be and have been transformed into autocracies. Each of the Twenty Lessons can help us think about actions we will take, as individuals and as a group, to resist fascism after Trump becomes president on January 20.
Reading Snyder’s book - it can be read in about an hour and a half! - is strongly recommended but not required. The workshop will begin promptly at noon in the Huntington Woods Recreation Ctr. and will end at 2:30.

ZOOM MEETING WITH NORMAN SOLOMON Wed. 10/18 6pm
Join us as Norman Solomon, an American journalist, media critic, activist, and former U.S. congressional candidate discusses his newly released book, WAR MADE INVISIBLE.
More than 20 years ago, 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan set into motion a hugely consequential shift in America’s foreign policy: a perpetual state of war that is almost entirely invisible to the American public. War Made Invisible exposes how this happened, and what its consequences are, from military and civilian casualties to drained resources at home.
Solomon details the ways in which the media accepts the premises of America’s wars—fighting for democracy, intervening humanely—and hides the horrific fate of its overseas victims, most often people of color in Asia or the Middle East.
“With an immense and rare humanity, Soloman insists that we awaken from the slumber of denial and distraction and confront the carnage of the U.S. 's never-ending military onslaughts. A staggeringly important intervention.” Naomi Klein, bestselling author of THE SHOCK DOCTRINE
“No one is better at exposing the dynamics of media and politics that keep starting and continuing wars. Wars Made Invisible will provide the fresh and profound clarity that our country desperately needs.” Daniel Ellsberg

With the leak of the Supreme Court draft of a decision to overturn Roe v Wade, a new emergency crisis is upon us. Although not entirely unexpected, the wording of the draft and the reality coming into focus has pro-abortion rights advocates alarmed and on high alert. What does it mean? What can we do? There are actions we need to take now to fight this impending decision.
We are happy to host Distinguished Wayne State University Professor of Law Robert Sedler speaking about what will happen after Roe is overturned, about the Supreme Court and the Constitution and about the prospect for obtaining abortions in the US.
We think it is more important than ever to snap into action now to fight the effects of this decision. We are happy to also host Ann Mullen, Communications Director of the ACLU Michigan to talk about actions to take now including the ongoing petition drive to put an amendment on the Michigan ballot to eliminate Michigan's 1931 abortion ban.
This will be an incredibly timely and informative discussion with two excellent speakers and information for actions you can take now. We hope you will join us.

The Huntington Woods Peace Group Presents ~ After the Derek Chauvin Verdict What Now? The Implications and the Way The trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd captured the attention of our country and generated anti-police brutality and racial justice demonstrations across the world. In April Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in a nationally televised trial. Although the conviction pointed the way to justice, there is much to do on the road to racial justice in our country. We are honored to present two attorneys who have been deeply involved in this struggle to talk about the trial, what led to the conviction and what the implications are for the future of the racial justice movement. Nancy Parker is an Attorney with The Detroit Justice Center The Detroit Justice Center works alongside communities to create economic opportunities, transform the justice system, and promote equitable and just cities. Ms. Parker earned her law degree from Washington University and her undergrad degree from the University of Michigan. She was assistant general consul for The United Steelworkers Union for eight years and has been involved in the defense of protestors in the anti police violence demonstrations in Detroit through her work on the staff of the Detroit Justice Center. David Robinson is a former Detroit police officer and a civil rights attorney who has represented and won cases against the Detroit Police Department Mr. Robinson went to Wayne State University for undergrad and Detroit College of Law for his law degree. He served as a police officer and legal consul to the Detroit Police Department. In private practice he has successfully pursued and won numerous cases protecting the rights of clients against the Detroit Police Department. Please put this on your calendar and look for the Zoom link that will be sent to you. |

ZOOM - Wednesday, January 17th 7pm
On September 30, 2020, Lacino Hamilton walked free after 26 years of wrongful incarceration in the Michigan prison system. " He was freed by long-buried DNA evidence -- after social activism demanded a review of his case.
Lacino spent his time fighting for his freedom, seeking help by writing thousands of letters to the outside world, and educating himself. On the inside, he became a columnist, writing about prison as part of a broader system of economic and racial exploitation. One of his columns, “The Gentrification-to-Prison Pipeline," recalled his time growing up in Detroit’s Cass Corridor.
Lacino Hamilton has plenty to say about prison and about society. His articulate voice needs to be heard. He’s eager to answer any and all questions.
A GoFundMe page has been set up on his behalf. https://gofund.me/652e7b1a. Anything you can contribute will go directly to Lacino. Donating will help Lacino secure the most basic necessities.! Join our Zoom Meeting on 2/17, 7pm

A Virtual Live Webinar Discussion Sunday, Dec 6, 2020 • 7-8:30 pm EST
A JVP-Detroit initiated webinar based on the recent writings of prominent journalist Peter Beinart, a committed Zionist and former advocate of the two-state solution, who now sees the mutual realization of both peoples’ self-determination on equal terms within one state as the key to resolving the current conflict. We invite people to learn about Beinart’s views, the challenges they pose to how the American Jewish community considers how it supports Israel, and whether they may be a viable basis for a solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Moderator: Jeffrey L. Falick is rabbi at The Birmingham Temple Congregation for Humanistic Judaism. He and his congregation are active locally and nationally in many social justice efforts.
Panelists: Wayne State University Professor Brad Roth will present Beinart’s argument for renouncing the “Jewish state” construct and the subjugation that it entails, in favor of a Zionism that affirms “a Jewish home that is a Palestinian home, too.”
Attorney Huwaida Arraf will present a Palestinian perspective and insights on Beinart’s new views. She is a Palestinian American human rights attorney and activist; co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led organization using non-violence and direct action to resist Israel’s colonization of Palestinian land; and former chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement, which sailed the first boats into Gaza to confront Israel’s illegal blockade on the two million Palestinians living there, and organized the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which was lethally attacked by Israeli forces.
Wayne State University Professor Fred Pearson will represent the perspective of the necessity of a Jewish state and for a two-state solution to the conflict. Prof. Pearson is the director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at WSU.

They will discuss what that interest looks like, what it means to the country, the upcoming elections and America's future in general.

On Jan 15, Distinguished Professor of Law, Robert Sedler, who specializes in Constitutional Law at Wayne State University Law School, presents a talk about the Trump Impeachment, what we can expect and should look for now as the process continues. the issues of how to stand up for immigrants and refugees can be overwhelming but if we try to address these issues as a community, whether religious congregation or social justice groups, the tasks become manageable. Come hear what some responses might be.
If you have a congregation or group that has found some success at addressing the issue, we would welcome you.
We would also welcome any group or individual who would like to help but don't know how, to come and learn and ask your questions.
