ZOOM - Wednesday, January 17th 7pm
On September 30, 2020, Lacino Hamilton walked free after 26 years of wrongful incarceration in the Michigan prison system. " He was freed by long-buried DNA evidence -- after social activism demanded a review of his case.
Lacino spent his time fighting for his freedom, seeking help by writing thousands of letters to the outside world, and educating himself. On the inside, he became a columnist, writing about prison as part of a broader system of economic and racial exploitation. One of his columns, “The Gentrification-to-Prison Pipeline," recalled his time growing up in Detroit’s Cass Corridor.
Lacino Hamilton has plenty to say about prison and about society. His articulate voice needs to be heard. He’s eager to answer any and all questions.
A GoFundMe page has been set up on his behalf. https://gofund.me/652e7b1a. Anything you can contribute will go directly to Lacino. Donating will help Lacino secure the most basic necessities.! Join our Zoom Meeting on 2/17, 7pm

A Virtual Live Webinar Discussion Sunday, Dec 6, 2020 • 7-8:30 pm EST
A JVP-Detroit initiated webinar based on the recent writings of prominent journalist Peter Beinart, a committed Zionist and former advocate of the two-state solution, who now sees the mutual realization of both peoples’ self-determination on equal terms within one state as the key to resolving the current conflict. We invite people to learn about Beinart’s views, the challenges they pose to how the American Jewish community considers how it supports Israel, and whether they may be a viable basis for a solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict.
Moderator: Jeffrey L. Falick is rabbi at The Birmingham Temple Congregation for Humanistic Judaism. He and his congregation are active locally and nationally in many social justice efforts.
Panelists: Wayne State University Professor Brad Roth will present Beinart’s argument for renouncing the “Jewish state” construct and the subjugation that it entails, in favor of a Zionism that affirms “a Jewish home that is a Palestinian home, too.”
Attorney Huwaida Arraf will present a Palestinian perspective and insights on Beinart’s new views. She is a Palestinian American human rights attorney and activist; co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led organization using non-violence and direct action to resist Israel’s colonization of Palestinian land; and former chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement, which sailed the first boats into Gaza to confront Israel’s illegal blockade on the two million Palestinians living there, and organized the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which was lethally attacked by Israeli forces.
Wayne State University Professor Fred Pearson will represent the perspective of the necessity of a Jewish state and for a two-state solution to the conflict. Prof. Pearson is the director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at WSU.
